Together with this team of guest lecturers, we will unravel the impact and use of machine learning and deep learning in a medical setting. We will discuss the challenges and opportunities of AI for the medical field. Lecturers at this edition of the Masterclass Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare include:
Wim Van Hecke is an academic engineer by training with two Master’s degrees in applied biomedical engineering and neuroimaging and a Ph.D. in diffusion MRI analysis. He is the author or co-author of over 150 scientific publications and is the founder of Icometrix. Icometrix, a spin-off from the universities and university hospitals of Antwerp and Leuven, uses artificial intelligence to analyze brain scans. Icometrix raised 16 million euros in capital to ensure its further growth. Van Hecke and his colleague, Chief Technology Officer Dirk Smeets, share the entrepreneurial lessons of Icometrix, the clinical challenges and the potential that AI offers for medical imaging.
Georges De Feu (LynxCare) started his career as a pharmacist, before co-founding the company LynxCare. With their big data platform, LynxCare breaks through the silos in hospitals and healthcare institutions, makes data more transparent and provides structures to enable artificially intelligent IT applications. He is joined by Geert Van Gorp, CTO of LynxCare, for this session.
Magali Feys (AContrario.Law) is a lawyer specializing in all aspects of intellectual property, information technology, data protection and data security law. In addition, Feys is a member of the e-Health legal working group of the cabinet of the Minister of Public Health. This working group advises the minister on the various legal aspects of digital care. She shares her knowledge in the field of legal and ethical preconditions for the use of artificial intelligence.
With their big data platform, LynxCare breaks through the silos in hospitals and healthcare institutions. Geert Van Gorp, Chief Technical Officer of LynxCare, explains how LynxCare is apply to mine structured and unstructured hospital data, to improve patient outcomes and make real-world data accessible for medical and life sciences research.
Nicky Hekster (Former Technical Leader Healthcare & Life Sciences IBM) was intensively involved with big data and artificial intelligence at IBM for many years. With a Ph.D. in mathematics, Hekster worked in the scientific domain of artificial intelligence before pursuing an international business career at IBM, becoming IBM Watson Ambassador. He provides insight into how and why big data will change healthcare and explains why computers are much smarter than people in certain areas of healthcare, but also why there is a lot of resistance and objections.
Matthieu Genicot is as data scientists at FibriCheck. FibriCheck is developing a smartphone application with an AI algorithm that analyzes whether the heart rhythm measurements taken by a user with a smartphone show abnormalities. They provide insight into the development, testing and training of machine learning models, and clinical validation.
Nathanaël Ackerman is the current lead of the AI4Belgium coalition. He is “AI & Innovation expert” at the Federal Public Service Policy and Support. Nathanaël has had a mixed public-private career : from research & teaching AI at Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB), to entrepreneurship. In 2012, he was appointed as Director for Innovation and International Relations at Brussels Enterprise Agency (now hub.brussels).
Dr. Mauritz Kop is a Stanford Law School TTLF Fellow, and a strategic intellectual property lawyer. Currently, he is managing partner at AIRecht (Artificial Intelligence & Law). He provides lectures and postgraduate education on intellectual property, technology, privacy and data law. He is a contributor for the European Commission, and is a member of the European AI Alliance and the Dutch AI Coalition.
Giovanni Briganti is a medical doctor (MD, PhD) and Lecturer of Statistics at Université de Bruxelles (Faculty of Medicine) and at Université de Mons. He works as a physician-scientist at the Department of Psychiatry of the Brussels Teaching Hospital – Brugmann (CHU Bruxelles Brugmann). Furthermore, he leads the AI4Health group at AI4Belgium, the Belgian government’s initiative for Artificial Intelligence.
Kurt Barbé is a professor at the department of mathematics and the department of public health of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB). As a biostatistician, he has spent the last 2 years working extensively on modeling the covid epidemic, and ollaborating with hospitals (including UZ Brussel) to apply AI models in a clinical context.
How do you apply Machine Learning? What research models are there, how do you work and train algorithms? Data scientist Joachim Schreurs takes the attendants into a deep dive of AI technology and shares the latest developments in machine learning algorithms at FibriCheck.
We conclude the first day of this masterclass with drinks and a three course dinner. A great way to share experiences, network and connect with like-minded innovators.
For this evening program, we welcome Kurt Barbé, Professor at Digital Mathematics from the Artificial Intelligence Lab Brussels, a division of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) leading fundamental and applied research in AI. The Artificial Intelligence Lab, founded in 1983 by Prof. Dr. Luc Steels, is the first AI lab on the European mainland. It is headed by Prof. Dr. Ann Nowé and Prof. Dr. Bernard Manderick. During its history of more than three decades, more than 50 people have received a PhD degree at the Artificial Intelligence Lab, of which 18 in the past 5 years only. The total amount of publications sums up to more than 850 publications which are cited more than 24.000 times, 8500 times in the last 5 years. The lab also has experience in setting up of spin-offs (5 since its beginning).
